DEVELOPING: The suspect in a shooting spree at an Aurora, Colo., movie theater was packing as many as 6,000 rounds with the ability to shoot up to 50 a minute, the police chief said Friday evening, as authorities continue to work to identify the dozen people killed in the massacre.
Dozens more were injured in the shooting, which occurred just after midnight early Friday during some of the first screenings of the blockbuster "Batman" sequel "The Dark Knight Rises."
The suspect, James Holmes, is in custody, thought police have yet to gain entry to his apartment, which they say appears to have been booby-trapped with explosives. Police Chief Dan Oates said Friday evening that efforts to enter the apartment were postponed until Saturday, when more resources would be brought in.
Oates said police soon will start meeting with the families of shooting victims to tell them the fate of their loved ones. The last of the 10 deceased victims at the theater was removed Friday afternoon. Two others had died later from their injuries.
Officers expect to get a confirmed list of the deceased and meet with their families Friday night.
Oates said there are 70 victims but not all were shot. Eleven are in critical condition.
The chief says suspect James Holmes purchased four guns at local gun shops and 6,000 rounds of ammunition through the Internet.
