KABUL – A large blast sounded on the outskirts of the Afghan capital Monday morning, sending a plume of smoke up in the air and shaking windows more than a mile (two kilometers) away in the city center. Police said it was inside a U.S. military contractor's compound.
It was not immediately clear if there were any dead or wounded.
The explosion happened inside the compound of a private company that works on international projects and Afghan police had not yet been allowed inside the compound, said Kabul deputy Police Chief Daoud Amini. Jalalabad road, where the explosion occurred, is home to a number of foreign companies that have offices inside of blast-walled compounds.
At the site, sirens wailed as ambulances pulled up to the site and waited on the side of the road. An Associated Press reporter saw a destroyed wall but could not see inside.
Amini said the compound was used by Contrack, a Virginia-based company whose projects include fuel storage, air field construction and tanker facilities for U.S. military bases in Afghanistan. Contrack did not respond to calls or emails asking for confirmation.
