'Hoodie' Protest Gets Rep Booted From House
Mar 28th 2012, 18:40

Democratic Rep. Bobby Rush, of Illinois, was asked to leave the House floor Wednesday after taking off his suit jacket to reveal a hooded sweatshirt, also referred to as a "hoodie," which Rush then proceeded to place over his head to protest the killing of Trayvon Martin in Florida.

"Racial profiling has to stop," said Rush as he removed his suit jacket. "Just because someone is wearing a hoodie, doesn't make them a hoodlum."

Greg Harper, R-Miss., the House presiding officer, repeatedly banged his gavel before citing Clause 5, Rule 17, which prohibits wearing hats in the chamber.

"The donning of a hood is not consistent with this rule," said Harper, who asked the Sergeant at Arms to enforce the prohibition.

Martin's parents appeared on Capitol Hill Tuesday with several members of the Congressional Black Caucus, including Rush, who have called for the arrest of George Zimmerman.

Zimmerman allegedly shot and killed Martin in February. His lawyers have said he acted in self-defense.
