Detroit Community Rallies to Give Woman New Home
Jun 16th 2012, 21:13

A Detroit community has come together in the spirit of giving, to provide a 78-year-old woman with a new home after hers was firebombed in April.

Thelma Taylor didn't have homeowner's insurance and didn't know which way to turn after she and her dog, Mercedes, barely escaped the attack, MyFoxDetroit.com reports.
But generous donors stepped in and made sure that the woman who has spent her life providing for others, would be taken care of.

"I'm happy, happy, happy. I'm ecstatic," Taylor told MyFoxDetroit.com. "I didn't know that anybody cared that much for me. It's beautiful," she said.

"What was so important to all of us who are helping her, including Thelma, was to pick a neighborhood that was safer and clean and had occupants in every house," Bonnie Fishman, who coordinated the effort, told MyFoxDetroit.com.

Fishman and a non-profit group purchased a foreclosed home with funds given by donors. Volunteers from the group will assist in the repair and renovations, the website reports.

Police believe the attack was a case of mistaken identity, and there have been no arrests in the case.

Mercedes and Thelma will be able to move in to their new home by July.
