Taliban Hostage Standoff Reported at Afghan Hotel
Jun 22nd 2012, 01:20

Afghan Taliban gunmen are reportedly holding several hostages at a Kabul lakeside hotel following an attack on the hotel on Friday, Afghan police say.

According to a Reuters report, some of the hostages include women and children, and a number of people have been killed.

The gunmen are said to be armed with rocket propelled grenades and heavy machine guns.

"Insurgents armed with RPG rockets, and heavy and light weapons, are inside the Spozhmai Hotel and fighting with security forces. We don't know their numbers and if there have been casualties,'' said Mohammad Zahir, head of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Kabul police.

Police are reportedly waiting for daylight to storm the hotel because they fear civilians are trapped inside. "According to the information we have, they have martyred some of them,'' Zahir said.

Reuters reports that the Afghan Taliban claimed responsibility for the gunbattle, and cited wealthy Afghans and foreigners who use the hotel to host 'wild parties' in the days ahead of a Friday religious holiday as the reason for the attack.
