DEVELOPING: A tsunami watch as been issued by the Pacific Tsunamic Warning Center Wednesday after a major earthquake in Costa Rica, Reuters reports.
A powerful, magnitude-7.6 earthquake has shaken Costa Rica, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. There are no immediate accounts of damage or injuries.
Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued tsunami warning for Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, and Peru.
Chile's navy has declared a tsunami alert warning for the country's coastline, Reuters reports.
A Tsunami Warning Center bulletin said it was unknown if a tsunami was generated, but the warning was based on the size of the earthquake.
The USGS said the quake struck offshore, about 50 miles from the town of Liberia that rattled buildings and caused power outages in some areas of the capital of San Jose, a Reuters correspondent and the U.S. Geological Survey reported.
In the coastal town of Nosara in northwest Costa Rica, trees shook violently and light posts swayed and teachers brought school students outside to safety.
