Explosions Rock Florida Gas Plant

DEVELOPING: Workers were injured and several were missing after series of large explosions rocked a gas plant in Lake County, Florida.

Lt. John Herrell, a spokesman for the Lake County Sheriff's Office said early Tuesday that 15 people who worked at the Blue Rhino propane plant were unaccounted for.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that the explosions began a little before 11 p.m. the plant in Tavares, Florida.

Aerial footage of the scene early Tuesday morning showed fires still burning over a large area shooting large flames and plumes of smoke into the night sky. Emergency crews could also be seen massing nearby.

Bryan Koon, director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management, told the Associated Press he is still getting "preliminary information" from local authorities. He did not have any "firm" numbers on injuries or deaths.

Koon did confirm that local authorities have evacuated people within a one-mile radius of the plant.

Lake County Sheriff Gary Borders said that all the explosions happened inside the plant and that the building's roof had been blown off.

Earlier, Herrell told the Orlando Sentinel that a night shift crew was working at the plant when the explosions occurred.

MyFoxOrlando.com reported that two people were taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center with serious burns and are in critical condition. The station also reported that between 12 and 15 people, likely workers, were in the plant's parking lot at the time of the explosion. The report added that initially, the group ran toward the building after noticing something was amiss shortly before the explosion, but then ran away from the building just prior to the blasts.

The plant covers one and a half acres and will continue to burn until firefighters either shut off the gas or figure out some other way to contain the fire.
