'OUT FOR BLOOD' 1 Dead as Car Drives Into Calif. Boardwalk Crowd
Aug 4th 2013, 10:21

LOS ANGELES –  The driver of a car that struck 12 people on the Venice Beach boardwalk in California, killing one and hospitalizing nine others early Saturday evening, did so deliberately, according to witnesses.

One witness told CBS LA that the driver was "out for blood." Another estimated that the car was going 60 miles per hour. The car was still moving as it drove out of sight of first responders and the injured.

I was half a mile from the scene, but you could see just this mass of people trying to get out of the way," witness Daniel Regidor told the Los Angeles Times. "Just a lot of people screaming ... It was horrible.

"I saw somebody flying up in the air," Regidor continued. "When I came upon the scene, there were a bunch of people on the ground, bloodied."

A Los Angeles Police spokesman said late Saturday that one person had been detained for questioning and a car had been impounded in nearby Santa Monica, though it was not immediately clear if the driver or the car in question had been found. Police were looking for a dark-colored Dodge Charger or Avenger. The driver was a man described as having sandy blond hair and estimated to be in his mid-20s, authorities said.

Restaurant manager Dennis Walker showed The Associated Press a seven-minute surveillance video that shows a young man parking the car next to the boardwalk. Minutes later he gets out wearing a baseball cap, gray shirt and white pants as he walks between the boardwalk and car for several minutes.

He then gets in and the car rapidly accelerates, screeching across a sidewalk to reach the promenade. The vehicle runs down sidewalk vendors and their booths and hits other people and objects as drives out of sight.

Initially, twelve injured had been counted, with 10 of them hospitalized. In addition to the fatality, two of the 10 were hurt seriously and one critically, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said. He had no details on the identities of the victims or their injuries. The deceased victim was identified by CBS LA only as a man who died at a local hospital hours after the crash.

The Venice boardwalk is a cultural hub in a part of Los Angeles known for its eccentricities. It is home to galleries, restaurants, tattoo shops, skateboard parks and the famous outdoor weight room known as Muscle Beach.
