BASKETBALL TRAGEDY Florida high school player dies after practice collapse
Sep 23rd 2013, 07:45

An 18-year-old Florida high school basketball player died on Saturday after collapsing at practice a day earlier, one of his former coaches says.

Ben Bromley, a junior varsity and assistant varsity basketball coach at Armwood High School in Tampa, said the death of Brandon High School's Milo Meeks is "mind blowing," the Tampa Tribune reports.

Doctors would not disclose the cause of Meeks' death on Sunday afternoon, but Bromley said Meeks collapsed at practice and was not responsive.

"He was on a ventilator, his heart shut down, his lungs shut down and his fever spiked," Bromley added.

A spokesman for the Hillsborough County School District said the principal at Brandon High School will help students and faculty deal with Meeks' death, the Tampa Tribune reports.

Since 2007, two other high school basketball players have collapsed during practice in the Tampa area, but both were able to be resuscitated.

A 2001 study posted on the U.S. National Center for Biotechnology Information's website, said there are 10 to 25 sudden cardiac deaths each year involving individuals under 30 years of age, according to estimates by the National Federation of State High School Associations.
