Al Qaeda Link Claimed in France School Shooting
Mar 21st 2012, 07:00

TOULOUSE, France –  An elite French anti-terror police unit raided a home early Wednesday in search of a suspect with possible Al Qaeda ties in the deadly massacre at a French Jewish school, French media reported.

A gunman killed three children and a rabbi at a Jewish school Monday, and is suspected to be linked to the killings of three off-duty soldiers the week before.

The suspect is reportedly holding out in what police describe as a pavilion, and is heavily armed. He is described as a 24-year-old ultra Islamist, who claims he was trained with Al Qaeda on the Afghanistan/Pakistan border.

He reportedly told police he was trained to avenge the killings of Palestinians, and is part of a terror cell.

"He was in the DCRI's sights, as were others, after the first two attacks," an official said, referring to France's domestic intelligence service, adding, "Then the criminal investigation police brought in crucial evidence."

Police have the suspect cornered, and say they want to take him alive. Two of the officers were slightly injured in the raid.

French Interior Minister Claude Gueant is at the scene in the Croix-Daurade district of Toulouse.

Gueant said the suspect "wants to take revenge for Palestinian children" killed in the Middle East, and is angry at the French military for its operations abroad.

He also said the suspect's brother has been arrested.

News of the raid came as the bodies of those shot dead at the Jewish Ozar Hatorah school in Toulouse arrived in Israel early Wednesday ahead of a burial service in Jerusalem.

The bodies of 30-year-old Rabbi Jonathan Sandler, his sons Arieh, five, and Gabriel, four, and seven-year-old Miriam Monsonego arrived at Ben Gurion international airport near Tel Aviv shortly after 5:45am local time on an El Al flight from Paris, an airport source told AFP.

They were gunned down Monday by a scooter-riding and helmeted gunman, who police believe was also responsible for the murders of an off-duty paratrooper March 11 and two of his comrades March 15.

Authorities said Monday that the same stolen scooter and the same .45 caliber handgun were used in all three attacks, which were carried out at precise four-day intervals.
