WINCHESTER, England – A mother in southeast England collapsed and died just eight days after giving birth to healthy triplets.
Isabel Mason died on March 10 at the Royal Hampshire County Hospital (RHCH) in Winchester after having Mattias, Lukas and Sarah on March 2, the Hampshire Chronicle reported Wednesday.
Her husband said his German-born 34-year-old wife had been "on top of the world" following the successful delivery.
"We were both overjoyed to be having an instant family, the triplets were our first and most probably our last children," Paul Mason said.
Medical staff at the RHCH were unable to save Mason when she collapsed just over a week later.
An inquest has been opened and adjourned into the death, the Southern Daily Echo reported. A possible cause of death has been given as hemopericardium, which is when blood leaks into the sac surrounding the heart from a cut in an artery.
A spokeswoman for Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said, "This is a real tragedy and our thoughts and sincere condolences are with the family who we are supporting at this difficult time."
