With a flurry of states' polls closing on the East, several key Senate races remained too close to call, as Democrats fight to hold onto control of the Senate and Republicans, who already control the House, look to tilt the balance of power.
Ten of the 33 races are expected to determine which party controls the upper chamber. There are 23 Democrats and 10 Republicans up for re-election in the Senate.
Democrats control the Senate 53-47.
Virginia has one of the closely contested races, with two former governors, Democrat Tim Kaine and Republican George Allen running for the open seat of outgoing Democratic Sen. Jim Webb.
In another hot Senate race, Republican Richard Mourdock and Democrat Joe Donnelly are neck and neck in Indiana in the battle for the Senate seat being vacated by long-time Capitol Hill fixture Richard Lugar.
Mourdock upset Lugar in the Republican primary but has struggled in the general election after making comments on rape and abortion that Democrats have used against him.
Fox News projects that liberal Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, an Independent who caucuses with the Democrats, will turn back a challenge by Republican John MacGovern.
And in West Virginia, Fox News projects that Sen. Joe Manchin, a Democrat who has distanced himself from Obama's restrictive coal regulations, will defeat Republican challenger John Raese.
