New York City police detectives on Sunday returned for the third time to the Upper East Side apartment of a laid-off clothing designer who allegedly gunned down a former colleague near the Empire State Building before being fatally shot by officers.
A law-enforcement official said investigators have removed a computer and "personal paperwork" from the East 82nd Street apartment of Jeffrey Johnson, 58 years old, who authorities said was responsible for the havoc on the sidewalks outside the iconic skyscraper on Friday morning.
Authorities said Mr. Johnson fatally shot his former Hazan Import Corp. colleague, Steven Ercolino, 41, outside the company's office on West 33rd Street before being confronted by police. Two officers—identified Sunday by the law-enforcement official as Craig Matthews, 39, and Robert Sinishtaj, 40—fired 16 rounds at Mr. Johnson after he raised his gun, authorities said.
Nine bystanders were injured by police bullets or their ricochets off concrete planters, authorities said. Three of them—two women and a man—remained in hospitals Sunday in stable condition.
Detectives spent the weekend sifting through evidence from Mr. Johnson's apartment, the official said, adding that a report of their findings is expected to be released on Monday.
