Fire Destroys At Least 50 Flooded Houses in NYC Oct 30th 2012, 09:36 Officials are estimating at least 50 homes have been destroyed as a fire ravages a flooded neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens. The New York Fire Department tells Fox News the six-alarm fire had destroyed 50 plus homes in the Breezy Point section, and a fire department spokesman says nearly 200 firefighters are currently fighting the blaze.  The department says flooding is making the fire harder to fight at this point, and they are unsure if there has been any fatalities or if people are trapped.  WABC reports a special FDNY unit scaled the buildings to rescue at least 25 people trapped by both fire and floodwater. The residents were brought to higher ground.  A spokesman tells The Associated Press at least two people have suffered minor injuries. Fire officials say the blaze was reported around 11 p.m. Monday in an area flooded by Monster Storm Sandy, which pounded the coastal area Monday. The neighborhood sits on the Rockaway peninsula jutting into the Atlantic Ocean. The record storm surge that hit New York from Sandy was higher than predicted. High winds damaged the electrical system and plunged millions of people into darkness.  Utilities say it could be up to a week before power is fully restored to the region.
